A world founded on story telling

From the beginning of time, stories have formed the foundation of society, as we have struggled to make sense of the world around us.

Some teach us how to live, some give us hope at the end of our days, some terrify us.

There is nothing more certain in our world than we will live, then we will die, it is what we do in between that counts.

Mark Kingdom has been driven out of his job as a profiler with Manchester Police and is seeking a new quiet life in the country as a freelance cold case investigator, and writer. He has a flawed character, driven by an obsession with women. Mark finds friendships difficult after the death of his wife and prefers casual intense relationships. Obsessed with fitness and health, he shows signs of mild obsessive compulsive disorder.

As his tenure begins, a brutal killing has been found not far from his new home, and he is drawn to the case even before he has had the chance to unpack his belongings. Needing his expertise as a psychological profiler, the local police ask him to put aside cold case reviews and step into this case to help the investigation. A bloody trail of murders follows with a killer who himself is highly intelligent and suffering a loss few others can understand. He leaves no clues or evidence apart from a few CCTV clips.

The police team flounder, and pursue a quick but wrong result, goading the killer into a response that escalates. A new leader is brought in, one who knows Mark from a previous force and recognising his aptitude encourages his involvement.

Action takes place around Dartmoor, and Exeter, with the perpetrator leaving gruesome displays of his victims. The victims have a common thread of addiction, that has caused pain to others, perceived by the killer to be worthless people.

Mark develops an unlikely friendship (a rare occurrence) with one of the suspects, himself an ex special branch officer in hiding, the case tragically exposes this suspect to his past, ending his life and enticing the security forces into play.

Chasing down contacts of the slain, brings other crimes to the surface, as the profile of the victims unfolds. Mark looks back into to the past to find similar possible victims and uncover where this all began.

Eventually, in a chilling turn the hunters become the hunted with devastating consequences.
